 
The YMCA of Greater Spartanburg's Aquatics Program is centered on water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. At the YMCA, aquatics include swim lessons for all ages, water fitness classes, lifeguard certification, water safety, and swim team programs. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime.
Swim Lessons: When it comes to swimming and water safety, no one is trusted more than the YMCA, "America's Swim Instructor". In fact, group swim instruction was developed by the YMCA in 1906. The YMCA offers a huge range of swimming options for the whole family. Swimming builds self-confidence and develops the whole person - spirit, mind and body. That's what the YMCA is all about! Classes are divided into ability groups and trained instructors emphasize personal safety, swimming skills, endurance and social skills, while guiding students with praise and encouragement. Our swim instructors are all thoroughly trained and continuously are involved in skill drills and refresher courses.
 Lifeguarding: This certification course is designed to give participants the skills and knowledge needed to be lifeguards in the pool. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to guard, anticipate and prevent problems, and how to take action to help those in dangerous situations. It also covers safety and survival skills which every swimmer needs to know; accident prevention, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills and first aid in aquatic environments.
First to establish systematic certification in lifesaving, swimming and aquatic instruction, the YMCA remains the largest organization for such instruction in the nation. Rigorous YMCA training means that all YMCA aquatics instructors are qualified experts in their field who provide thousands of children each year with the highest quality aquatics education.
The Middle Tyger YMCA is also home to the The Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club which is a year-round competitive swim team located in South Carolina’s upstate. YSSC is a program of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg. YSSC competes in both USA Swimming and YMCA sanctioned meets. YSSC offers a step by step progression for every child, no matter the ability or age, in the sport of swimming. There is over 75 years of combined coaching experience amongst the Staff that has produced South Carolina State Qualifiers & Champions, Age Group Sectional Qualifiers & Champions, Y-National Qualifiers & Champions, Junior National Qualifiers, & USA Olympic Trial Qualifiers. The YSSC Staff has a love and enthusiasm for the sport of swimming that is unmatched by any other club in the Southeast. Long term planning and goal setting are the greatest tools our staff uses to develop a lifelong love of swimming.
