2016 Fall Backpacking Trip
When: Saturday, September 24 - Saturday, October 1, 2016
Where: Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, GA to Top of Georgia Hostel at Dick's Creek Gap (70 miles)
Description: Backpack the Appalachian Trail Saturday, September 24th - Saturday, October 1st, from Springer Mountain, GA to Dick's Creek Gap and Top of Georgia hostel. This trip is for experienced hikers who are able to hike from 7 to 13 miles per day carrying their own gear, food and water. The Y will provide transportation to and from the trip, departing the Y at 6am on Saturday, September 24th and returning Saturday, October 1st late afternoon. Optional 3 day trip with pick up at Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area on Monday, 9/27/2016 at 6pm.
Program fee $48 includes transportation to and from the Thomas Hannah Y, Lake Winfield Scott campground fee.
Fee for Top of Georgia hostel is $25 for a bunk, shower and breakfast to be paid individually directly to hostel. Participants provide their own equipment and food. Maximum 10 people, ages 16 and up.
What should I bring?
What shouldn't I bring?
A used pack or duffle bag that is not specifically fit to your body or is not designed to be comfortable ( i.e. does not have a cushioned waist belt, etc.) over long distances. If you do not have a modern backpack, a lightweight backpacking tent, a lightweight warm sleeping bag and sleeping pad, a backpacking stove, or a backpacking water bottle or hydration system, RENT one from the Local Hiker in Spartanburg or REI in Greenville or Asheville! Do NOT bring canned foods, cast iron or other heavy cooking pots or skillets, large tents designed for car camping, or any other heavy items. Your pack should not weigh more than 35-40 pounds!
