Youth Development

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen.

Nationwide, nine million youth are taking a greater interest in learning; making smarter life choices; and cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, the pursuit of higher education and goal achievement.

At the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, we offer a wide variety of programs, special events, fitness classes, and services geared toward helping our youth become healthy, happy adults.

Wellford Academy and the Middle Tyger Y have partnered up to make a difference for our youth.  The Swim Safe program was implemented to teach children how to be safe around the pool, basic survival skills and stoke techniques.  Some of the children who participated in the program were in lessons for the very first time.  With our work, together we can reduce the risk of drownings and make a positive impact in our community.

Developmental Assets

At the Y, we build Developmental Assets®.

A fundamental component of the Y’s youth development work, Developmental Assets® are the building blocks that all young people need to succeed in life. These building blocks come from both family and community in the form of positive adult relationships, support in school, and firm, protective boundaries.

These assets—40 of them—dramatically increase the chance that young people grow up to be caring, competent, and community-minded adults by helping them successfully navigate young adulthood and by nurturing their potential.
