Youth Soccer
Youth Soccer will help your child learn sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork. Here at the Y, we want your child to grow to become a strong leader with great character while also learning the sport and how enjoyable it can be. Your child will learn many life lessons and make many new friendships this season!
Age groups for soccer are U4 (3-year-olds), U6 (4 & 5-year-olds), U8 (6 & 7 year olds), U10 (8 & 9 year olds), U12 (10 & 11 year olds), and U15 (12-14 year olds).
Once teams have been selected and coaches assigned, practices will begin. At this point, rosters will not be changed.
Note: Middle Tyger Soccer practices/games will be held at Carolina FC (200 Madison Avenue, Wellford, South Carolina 29385)
Your athlete will need:
- Black Soccer Shorts
- Shin Guards
- Sneakers/Cleats (No metal bottoms)
- Soccer Ball
Soccer Jersey:
- Soccer Jersey (Purchasable at the front desk during the first week of practices for $22 – jersey can be reused for multiple outdoor sports and seasons).
Please make sure you select the size that best fits your child/children. Once uniforms are ordered, we can’t change sizes. The parent/guardian will be responsible for repurchasing the jersey.
CROSSPLAY BETWEEN BRANCHES
In the event that registration numbers at any individual branch are not sufficient to field a full division, players may be combined with participants from another YMCA of Greater Spartanburg branch to ensure every child has the opportunity to play. This allows us to keep all divisions active and competitive regardless of enrollment at any single location. Families will be notified directly if crossplay between branches is necessary for their division.
If you are interested in coaching, please email [email protected] (Middle Tyger YMCA) or [email protected] (Thomas E Hannah YMCA). Volunteer coaches who coach through the season will have one player’s registration fee refunded at the end of the season!
Refund policy:
- Refund requests must be made 5 business days before the start of the program (first practice). Any refund or credit request will be subject to a $10 administrative fee. Refunds will be issued in the manner in which they were paid, less administrative fees. Once the program has started, no refunds will be issued unless the YMCA is unable to continue the program or there is an extenuating circumstance beyond the participant’s control. In this case, the director may prorate the unused portion of the program back to the participant, combined with the administration fee of $10.
U4 (3 Year Olds)
ABOUT THIS DIVISION
Our U4 division is the perfect first step into organized soccer for players age 3. With small teams of 4 players on the field at a time, our youngest athletes develop foundational movement skills, learn to follow simple instructions, and experience the joy of being part of a team in a fun, low-pressure environment. Coaches are welcome on the field to support their players throughout.
SCHEDULE
To get players ready for game day, U4 holds weekday practices during the first two weeks of the season (weeks of August 17 and August 24), held Monday–Thursday at 5:30, 6:30, or 7:30 PM. Once games begin on August 29, U4 moves to a Saturday-only schedule — no additional weekday practices are held for the remainder of the season. The season runs 7 games (6 guaranteed), beginning August 29 and ending October 17.
GAME FORMAT
Teams of 4 play on a small field using a size 3 ball in four 5-minute quarters, with 1-minute breaks between quarters. There are no goalies in U4 — every player stays in the field and learns to kick, move, and play together. Games are played on Saturday mornings beginning at 9:00 AM. No scores or standings are kept — the focus is entirely on fun and development.
EQUIPMENT & RULES NOTES
Shin guards are required for all players. Metal cleats are not permitted; tennis shoes or soft-studded turf shoes are recommended. Jewelry and hard hairpieces are not allowed.
INTERESTED IN COACHING?
We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to lead our teams! No prior coaching experience is required — just a passion for working with kids and a commitment to making the season a great experience for every player on your roster. Coaches play a vital role in the success of our program, and we are grateful for every volunteer who steps up.
As a thank-you for your time and dedication, coaches receive the cost of their child’s registration credited back to their account at the conclusion of the season. We also provide practice materials and drill resources to help you hit the ground running from day one.
To get started, please send an email to your branch contact with the following information:
- Sport you are interested in coaching
- Age division you would like to coach
- Any specific coaching requests (preferred practice days/times, players you’d like on your team, co-coach preferences, etc.)
This helps us place you with the right team and build rosters that work for everyone involved.

The U12 division delivers a competitive, full-featured soccer experience for players ages 10–11. Standings are kept all season and top teams advance to a single-elimination end-of-season tournament — one of two tournament divisions in the league.
SCHEDULE
Practices are held once per week Monday–Thursday at 5:30, 6:30, or 7:30 PM beginning the week of August 17. Games begin August 29 on Saturday mornings. The 7-game regular season (6 guaranteed) ends October 17, followed by the end-of-season tournament.
GAME FORMAT
Teams of 9 compete in two 20-minute halves with a 3-minute halftime, using a size 4 ball. Full league rules apply — offside, direct and indirect kicks, penalty kicks, and a yellow/red card conduct system.
EQUIPMENT & RULES NOTES
Shin guards are required. Heading the ball is strictly prohibited in U12 and below per YMCA concussion prevention policy (adopted from USSF) — a headed ball results in an indirect free kick for the opposing team. No slide tackling. Metal cleats and jewelry are not permitted. Tennis shoes or soft-studded turf shoes are recommended.
